Veolia and the research firm Elabe have just carried out the 1st Barometer of Ecological Transformation. This unprecedented opinion survey covers nearly 60% of the world's population, spread over 5 continents and 25 countries, including Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria. For the first time, a survey assesses the level of acceptability of ecological solutions and analyzes the brakes and levers of action to accelerate the transformation. So, are these African countries ready to accept the changes needed to take action and face the environmental emergency? Elements of an answer.
- 71% of the inhabitants questioned feel vulnerable to climate risk, which could lead to harsher living conditions, degraded ecosystems, migratory movements and more natural disasters. This average is almost identical in Nigeria (70%) and Ivory Coast (68%), and lower in Morocco (57%).
- More than 8 out of 10 Nigerians are convinced that the future of the climate and ecology is still in our hands. Nigeria is the 3rd country in the world behind Indonesia (90%) and India (86%) where this certainty is the highest. In Africa, this opinion is higher than in Ivory Coast (71%) and Morocco (58%).
- If 60% of Ivorians and 58% of Nigerians think that we need to change our way of life, they are only 41% in Morocco, the country with the most supporters of a path towards sobriety.
- One last figure to note that at the global level, 56% of respondents believe that there is not enough talk about the solutions to be implemented to mitigate pollution and climate disruption. This figure even reaches 66% in Nigeria. It is 58% in Morocco and 55% in Ivory Coast. It is therefore necessary to talk more and better about the solutions to be deployed (wastewater reuse, indoor air quality, circular economy, waste bioconversion) and those to be invented.
